Albuquerque police are looking for a man who they say shot and killed a woman in front of officers early Monday morning near Second Street and Central SW.
Authorities say at least one officer fired on the shooter after he killed the woman, but the suspect was not struck.
Officers were unable to discharge any other rounds, due to the size of the crowd on scene, Albuquerque Police Department Chief Harold Medina said. “The offender did flee,” he added.
Police have identified the victim as 21-year-old Melina Jones.
Medina said the officers were in the area responding to a physical dispute at about 1:15 a.m. when the shooting occurred.
Members of the Multi Agency Task Force are now investigating, the release states.
Medina said this is the 11th officer-involved shooting of the year. Six of the previous shootings have been fatal and at least five were related in some way to a mental health crisis.
The incident resulted in several road closures during the Monday morning commute.
“Detectives do not have any suspect information at this time,” Albuquerque police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos wrote in an email Monday afternoon.
