• A special presentation for children at the Placitas Community Library
  • Saturday, Sept. 10, 1-3 p.m.

The Garden Wall, written by Phyllis Limbacher Tildes, will be read. The story is about the friendship between a hearing child and a deaf child. After the story, Donna Salamoff will teach the children signing.

Here is a summary of the story:

Tim is unhappy about moving to the city and leaving his best friend. He has to attend a strange, new school, and to make things more difficult, his next-door neighbor is a girl who is deaf. How can he be friends with her?

With warmth and wit, award-winning author and illustrator Phyllis Limbacher Tildes weaves a sensitive story that opens a window to the deaf experience. Young readers will discover that true communication begins with an open mind and heart. Written in conjunction with Imagination Stage, Inc.

Ms. Salamoff, herself is deaf and also reads lips.  She has taught herself to speak perfect English.  When you meet Donna, be sure to face her so she can see your lips and you can carry on a conversation with her as with anyone else.

This will be a fun and enlightening program for all.  Hope you can join us.

In addition, the children’s committee members are preparing a related activity on signing and it will be available to our patrons in the Pearl Room.
