The fun in Sunday is Funday is online this year.

Organizer and Rio Rancho Kiwanis Club member David Heil said the 15th annual community picnic and carnival can’t be held in person because of the coronavirus pandemic. So, daily through Aug. 23, a new, fun video will be posted on the Sunday is Funday website, rioranchofunday.com.

Heil said the videos are appropriate for general audiences and may appear on the home page or “Entertainment” page. The subjects range from footage of a coral reef to dogs appearing to eat with human hands to Lee Greenwood singing “God Bless the USA.”

“We wish everyone fun in these interesting times,” Heil said. “We all need a little light-heartedness right now.”

Anyone who wants to contribute a video can send it to him at [email protected].

The online event has the theme “Go Green Rio Rancho!” In that vein, informational videos from the environmental consciousness committee, a joint effort between Sandoval County and the City of Rio Rancho, will appear on the site.

People can donate to local youth organizations, the usual benefactors of money raised with Sunday is Funday, at the bottom of the homepage.

Through the end of today, the Kiwanis club is teaming up with Magic Mirror Photobooth to offer free digitally framed selfies. People can take a cell phone photo and text it to 207-0915 or email it to [email protected]. (Yes, that’s the correct spelling.)

The photo will be returned with an image of a frame around it.

“We’re just trying to keep the thing alive,” Heil said. “Hopefully next year, we can celebrate the city’s 40th year and have a real, live Sunday is Funday again.”
