The Class 5A state tennis championships get underway Wednesday at the Jerry Cline tennis complex* in northeast Albuquerque.

Cleveland and Rio Rancho high schools have multiple entries in the singles and doubles competition Wednesday and Thursday, while the Rams boys and girls are in the team tournaments Friday and Saturday.

BOYS SINGLES start Wednesday:

At 4:30 p.m., Cleveland sophomore Collin Nicholson faces Deming’s Sebastien Lescombes; Rams sophomore Thomas Icken meets La Cueva’s Thaaj Bhardwaj and Rams senior Keegan Gooch squares off against Los Lunas’s Nick Morales.

If victorious, they’ll play in the quarterfinals Thursday at 10 a.m. Semifinals matches are Thursday at 2, with the championship match – also on Thursday – at 5:30.

GIRLS SINGLES start Wednesday:

At 4:30 p.m., Rams senior Ashlee Searle meets Mikayla Montano of Santa Fe and Cleveland senior Maya Jio tackles Hobbs’ Isabel Armendariz.

If Searle wins, she’ll move into the first round to face third-seeded Ellise Jay of Mayfield at 7 p.m. If Jio wins, she’ll advance into the quarterfinals Thursday at 10 a.m., when she’ll meet the winner of the Searle/Montano-Jay winner.

The girls’ semis are at 2, with the championship match at 5:30 Thursday.

BOYS DOUBLES start Wednesday:

At 3 p.m., Cleveland’s Elliot Brann, a senior, and freshman Tyler Nunn meet a Roswell tandem, with the winning duo earning the right to meet top-seeded Lumanog/Van Dyke of La Cueva at 6.

Also at 3, Rio Rancho sophomore Ryan Meier and junior Brodrick Lasley meet a Manzano tandem, with that match winner playing again at 6 vs. the Piedra Vista No. 2 team of Sabol and Sabol.

The quarterfinals are Thursday at 8:30 a.m., followed by semis at noon and the championship match at 3:30.

GIRLS DOUBLES start Wednesday:

At 6 p.m., the No. 1 seeded duo of Rams Kate Segal, a senior, and junior Samantha Baltz await their first-round opponents – either from Carlsbad or Deming, a match being played at 3.

At 3 p.m., Cleveland’s Ireland Myerscough, a sophomore, and Kaiya AuBuchon, a junior, play a Manzano duo for the right to meet the No. 4 Santa Fe duo at 6.

Two other matches involving City of Vision doubles teams play at 3: CHS juniors Peyton Casey and Rachel Shaw meet an Alamogordo tandem, and Rams seniors Kennedy Baugh and Presley Saxon meet a La Cueva tandem.

Match winners head to quarterfinal action Thursday morning at 8:30. The semis are at noon and the championship match is Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS TEAM COMPETITION starts Friday

The 10th-seeded RRHS boys meet No. 7 Alamogordo, with doubles at 8 and singles at 9:30. The winning team advances into the quarterfinals, where it’ll meet No. 2 Piedra Vista, also Friday, with doubles at 2 and singles at 3:30.

The team semis start with doubles at 11 a.m. and singles at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the championship match follows, with doubles at 3:30 and singles at 5 p.m.

GIRLS TEAM COMPETITION starts Friday:

The District 1-5A champion Rams got the 3 seed and meet the winner of the Deming-Manzano match Friday in the quarterfinals, with doubles at 5 and singles at 6:30 p.m.

The team semis start with doubles at 11 a.m. and singles at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, and the championship match follows, with doubles at 3:30 and singles at 5 p.m.
