Espinda ‘en fuego’ on the local lanes

John Espinda threw three big scores back-to-back to run down early leader Brian Skidmore at Tenpins & More June 17.

Espinda, opening with 202 and 225, then went on a strike spree, carding 259-268-258, then closed with 209 as Skidmore finished with 192 in a roll-off to win paid entry in to the $70,000 New Mexico Open at Tenpins & More August 18-20.

Espinda’s 1,421/6 gave him a 236.8 average, compared to Skidmore’s 1,406 at 234.3.

Third place went to Eric Vanderlip (1,356), followed by Jacob Gill (1,317), Aileen Linares (1,316) and Bob Eberle (1,312).

The next roll-off to win paid entries is Sunday, July 9, at 9 a.m.

In the meantime, the 12th Summer Center Championships run two weekends (June 23-25 and June 30-July 2), followed by the Summer Masters final on the morning of July 4.


Storm baseball camp and workouts are in July

Cleveland High School summer baseball workouts are set for July 10-27, with workouts taking place Mondays-Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Weightlifting takes place daily in the fieldhouse from 9:30-10:30, followed by activities on the field from 10:30-12:30.

Athletes should have physical exams completed, and wear T-shirts and shorts, and tennis shoes (cleats for the field), to the workouts, and bring Gatorade/water, and gloves and bats.

Final Rams volleyball camps served up in July

Longtime Rio Rancho High School volleyball coach Toby Manzanares has his final skills camp coming up in late July.

Manzanares, his staff and area guest coaches lead the camp.

Here are the details:

“Ram Camp 2” is designed to prepare players for tryouts in their respective grades, 7-12. it emphasizes volleyball skills and drills to prepare middle school and high school players for school tryouts. Fundamentals and techniques for all basic volleyball skills will be emphasized. Additional time will be focused on small- and large-group team play.

The camp takes place at RRHS July 31-Aug. 3 from 6-9 p.m. The cost is $100; $120 for walk-ups, and campers receive a T-shirt and the chance to win prizes. There will be a concession stand, where cash and credit cards are accepted.

Rio Rancho Open tees off August 11

The Rio Rancho regional Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 Rio Rancho Open Golf Classic is slated to tee off at 8L30 a.m. on Friday, August 11, at Santa Ana Golf Club.

The tournament is limited to 40 teams; check-in is at 7:30 a.m. The event will tee off in a shotgun start.

Mulligans and strings sales will be available, plus special raffles and hone-in-one games. Included are breakfast and an awards luncheon, and sponsorships are available.
