Placitas Community Library

The Placitas Library series “Placitas Reads: Color, Class and Caste” feedback has led to two new ongoing groups that consider the structures upon which American culture is built.

The two new ongoing groups are:

  • A Social Justice Book Group, coordinated by Anne Frost. Group members will share leadership and explore a variety of readings and films in the area of social justice. Together they’ll choose the books and format. The meeting time is 10 a.m. on the first Friday of the month, starting Jan. 7, in the Collin Meeting Room. The meeting time can be changed to better suit participants. For more information, contact Frost at [email protected].
  • SULTA: Show Up, Learn, Take Action, facilitated by Osa Arkin. The action-oriented group will use a variety of web-based sources to study issues through a social-justice lens. Meeting times are 2 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month and 10 a.m. on the third Saturday, starting Jan. 4, in the Collin Meeting room. Meeting times can change based on needs of participants.

The main goal is to build knowledge on issues that resonate with participants, increase their capacity to be an advocate within their social networks and explore actions they might take with a group of similarly interested people. The group will usually work on a new issue each session, so people can jump in and out as they desire.

Anyone interested should email Arkin at [email protected] with his or her name and phone number or email to allow for updates on scheduling changes and the list of topics.

Participation in these groups is open to all.

Also, the Placitas Library community is wondering if it should offer a community read again. People interested in another opportunity to explore a book together through the library should contact Frost at [email protected].
