Sandoval County Treasurer Jennifer A. Taylor announced Monday that her office is offering a Junior County Treasurer program for two Sandoval County high school students (one junior and one senior).

The selected candidates will have an opportunity to experience  how local government, specifically the Treasurer’s Office, works. The program will be held during the fall 2023 school semester.

While participating in the program, the junior county treasurers will learn how the county:

  • Collects property taxes
  • How the money collected is allocated to various groups such as DWI, Fire & 911 Services, Libraries, Public Safety, Senior Program, Roads & Infrastructure, Landfill, Detention Center
  • Basic customer services skills as the treasurer’s office works with the public and for the public

Curriculum requirements are:

  • Attendance at a county commission meeting
  • Attendance at a board of finance meeting
  • Attendance at a Sandoval County Investment Committee Meeting
  • Attendance at a county-sponsored community event
  • Participation in a mock board of finance meeting

Upon completion of these activities, each junior county treasurer will receive a plaque of recognition at a county commission meeting.

Interested students must submit a short essay of 500 words or less that explains why they would like to participate in the program. A panel of three will review all the submitted essays and select two junior county treasurers. Essays are due by 5 p.m. Sept. 1. The two selected candidates will be announced Sept. 15. Essays should be sent via email in PDF format to Taylor at [email protected].
