Rio Rancho firefighters put out two house fires within a matter of hours Thursday.

No one was injured in either fire, but both blazes displaced families, said Fire and Rescue Acting Chief James DeFillippo.

The first was started in the garage of a home on Stallion Road in Western Hills. Firefighters were able to mostly contain the blaze in the garage and extinguish it.

The second fire was in a chimney of a home off Everest and Spur roads. Again, firefighters kept the flames from spreading throughout the house, although there was still significant damage.

DeFillippo said two structure fires in one day is rare. The causes of both fires are under investigation.
