Richard Edgell, about 66, of Rio Rancho, was arrested Sept. 9 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer at a residence on La Resolana Avenue.
A woman called police reporting that her neighbor, Edgell, had shot at her with a bow and arrow while she was in her backyard but that she was not harmed.
She said that while she was gardening, Edgell began to bother her by saying things that didn’t make sense. He also waved a paper at her, and then shot the arrow at her, which narrowly missed over her left shoulder.
The woman, who is not originally from the United States, said she thought the incident was racially motivated because Edgell was saying things such as, “All the foreigners are charged,” and “You’ll be deported,” and that Edgell has malice for her due to her nationality.
When police contacted Edgell, he ignored police commands and continued to enter and exit his house. Officers were eventually successful in detaining Edgell in his backyard. He admitted to shooting his neighbor’s dog with a bow and arrow.
If Edgell is convicted, he faces a minimum of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
