The pandemic hasn’t stopped Rio Rancho Police from collecting Christmas gifts for children.

RRPD and its Explorers Post 911 are asking the community for help gathering new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls ages 2-12 from Oct. 30-Nov. 28. Organizers prefer to get toys, but people can also donate with checks made out to “Rio Rancho Police Explorers Post 911.”

Toys will be given out Dec. 12 via drive-thru, due to COVID restrictions, according to an RRPD news release.

“Especially this time of year, COVID can probably bring more challenges to the household,” said police Lt. Richard Koschade. “So anything we can do to make the holidays special to these children is important.”

For nearly 20 years, RRPD and its Explorers post have collected gifts and held a Christmas party, serving about 300 low-income children a year, according to the release.

Koschade said it’s hardest to get gifts for older children. Donors can drop off toys at RRPD, 500 Quantum Road, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
