People traveling down parts of Westphalia Boulevard NE will soon notice a change.

The Rio Rancho Planning and Zoning Board voted to rename Westphalia, between Paseo Del Volcan NE and Progress Boulevard NE, Iris Road NE at its Tuesday meeting.

Iris Road currently runs from New Mexico Highway 528 to Paseo del Volcan, where it becomes Westphalia.

The name change will benefit the public and reduce the confusion created by the current configuration at the signalized intersection of Paseo del Volcan. This will also result in the same roadway name being on both sides of the intersection and it will span the length of the street, Consensus Planning Principal James Strozier said.

The properties along this section of the roadway are vacant, and there are no existing buildings that would be affected by changes to the street name.

Future commercial development near the intersection will be positively impacted by the change because it will create a consistent street name pattern, Strozier said.

It seems like a good idea “to get this accomplished before we have a bunch of tenants and users at that stretch,” he said.
