A 43-year-old Rio Rancho man could face up to a year behind bars after allegedly trying to throw a Bible at a deacon.

At about 7:30 p.m. May 6, Rio Rancho police officers were dispatched to the Church of the Incarnation in reference to a call of a possible burglary.

The suspect, John Vallejos, was allegedly trying to use a pin to get inside the church when officers arrived.

As he was being arrested, he acted “disorderly” toward the officers. The criminal complaint does not go into additional detail.

The suspect also reportedly grabbed a Bible and attempted to throw it at a church deacon.

Vallejos was issued a summons for alleged disorderly conduct and assault (attempted battery).

An arraignment has been scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 9.

If he is found guilty, Vallejos could face up to a year in prison and pay a $1,000 fine.
