Editor:

The 2020 general election was truly a remarkable one.

In the middle of a global pandemic, my fellow candidates and I sidelined typical campaign activities and adopted new ones to keep everyone safe. Voter turnout hit historic highs with a majority deciding to vote via absentee ballot or to vote early.

I am so proud of the leadership in the Secretary of State’s office and good implementation by the Sandoval County clerk.

It was a challenging campaign. We won this race by discussing the issues that matter to voters, like following the science as we contend with a global pandemic, addressing the violent gun culture, how to fully fund education and health care, diversifying our economy through renewable energy and agriculture including hemp and cannabis, and all the while knowing how we need to be stewards of the environment.

I thank my fellow Americans who decided to run for public office. It is noble, and I regard the trust the voters placed in me to represent them highly and will do so with integrity, strength and heart.

I am proud to help increase the number of women in the state senate and to be the first Pueblo woman to serve New Mexico in this capacity.

Your support will guide me as I take office as your New Mexico state senator for District 9, and I will never forget who I work for! I am thankful for this opportunity and look forward to fighting for the future of our state.
