BERNALILLO — Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi inspired six generations of winemakers within the Rinaldi family tree to carry on his legacy, right here in Bernalillo.

So, descendants of the late winemaker unveiled a sign for the Giovanni Giorgio Rinaldi Memorial Bridge on Friday in his honor. The bridge is located along southbound U.S. 550, directly across from Bosque Brewing Company in Bernalillo.

Maria Rinaldi said Giovanni, her great grandfather, first moved from northern Italy to America in 1889. She also said that by the end of the 19th century, Giovanni made his way to the Rio Grande Valley and what is now Peña Blanca in eastern Sandoval County.

And so began the long history of winemakers in the family.
