The Cleveland High School girls’ basketball team tips off its 2023-24 season Tuesday (Nov. 28) evening with a 6 p.m. contest vs. visiting Clovis High School. This is the first of four Q&As and season schedules for the City of Vision’s four varsity basketball teams. (The Rio Rancho High School boys are featured Tuesday.)

Cleveland High School

Girls’ 2023-24 basketball schedule

The Storm are coached by Susan Kubala, heading into her 10th season at the helm. The Storm were 15-13 overall last season, 5-3 in District 1-5A. CHS received the 13 seed for state and lost a first-round game at Carlsbad, 36-24.

Here are the Observer’s questions for coach Kubala:

  1. Why should people come out to watch your team play this season? People should come out to watch our team play because the girls are a very scrappy and competitive group — they will see a group of girls who give their best effort – compete to the best of their ability and have fun doing so!
  2. Who are some of your players fans should keep their eyes on? Kindyll Sandoval (senior shooting guard), Savannah Madueno (sophomore combo guard), Aubrey Jaramillo (junior point guard), Erin Winters (sophomore point guard), Jaslene Big Crow (sophomore post), Noelle Manzanares (senior guard) and Kiara Garcia (senior forward).
  3. What game(s) on the schedule are the one(s) your team really needs to beat to show it’s competitive and deserves a seed at state? EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM — that’s what the seeding requirements boil down to.
  4. What’s one change you’d like to see in high school basketball in the coming seasons? The shot clock would be interesting to implement, but the cost is pretty prohibitive for a lot of school districts.
  5. Who’s the best all-around student-athlete you’ve ever coached? Since I have been coaching a LONG time, I have been lucky to have quite a few; I really don’t want to leave anyone out, so I am going to say, “Too many to list!”
