Car crashes remain the No. 1 cause of death among children, and three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly, according to AAA New Mexico.

The organization is hosting a free virtual Child Passenger Safety Seat workshop from 6-7 p.m. Thursday.

With it, AAA New Mexico aims to educate more parents and caregivers about proper seat installation and help save lives. Covered topics include:

  • How to select the right safety seat for your child,
  • How to correctly secure your child in a seat,
  • Safety seat installation tips, and
  • Child safety seat laws and best practices.

“Young children in particular are more likely to be injured in car crashes because their bodies are just not fully formed and are more susceptible to crash forces,” said Kara Thorp, AAA New Mexico public affairs specialist and certified child passenger safety seat technician. “When installed correctly, however, car seats can reduce injury between 45 and 71 percent.”

Registration is required at AAA.com/ChildSafety or by calling 512-383-4342.
