A 12-year-old girl died and two other people were seriously injured in a four-car collision on NM 528 near Barbara Loop a little after 3 p.m. Monday, according to Rio Rancho Police.
Deputy Police Chief Andrew Rodriguez said the 12-year-old died and another girl was severely injured in a car that hit a pole. The injured girl was in stable condition in the hospital Tuesday, he said.
Rodriguez declined to release the identity of the deceased child.
He said a man in another car, which rolled, was transported to the hospital with severe head injuries and was in stable condition Tuesday.
He had no updates on the conditions of the man or surviving girl Friday.
The occupants of the other two vehicles received very minor injuries, and the cars had light damage, Rodriguez said. Six people were involved in the wreck.
“Because of the catastrophic damage to (two of) the vehicles, we won’t know exactly what happened until we finish the investigation,” Rodriguez said.
Police won’t know if any charges will be filed until then, he added.
The cause was still under investigation Friday.
“We’re doing our best to keep the street safe, but unfortunately, we do have incidents that are out of our control and, unfortunately, people do suffer because of it,” Rodriguez said.
