Bad news for Rio Ranchoans in search of a tasty, unique dessert: From now on, you’ll have to go down the hill to get a treat from Crazy Bomb Cups.

Crazy Bomb Cups, known for its array of ice cream, sorbet, Mexican candies and milkshakes, permanently closed its location in Hilltop Plaza Monday. Owner Cindy Lopez said staffing issues caused the closure.

“It’s sad, but we just couldn’t keep up,” Lopez said. “We couldn’t find workers, and we were getting very busy and we couldn’t keep up with both of the stores.

The original Crazy Bomb Cups location in Albuquerque remains open. That store opened in 2019. In July 2021, Lopez and the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber held a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the opening of the Rio Rancho store.

“There’s not that many options as far as ice cream and anything like that, so that’s why we decided to take it to the city of Rio Rancho,” Lopez told the Observer in 2021.

Crazy Bomb Cups was a hit in Rio Rancho but less than two years later, it’s closed for good.

“We were starting to get very, very popular in the Rio Rancho community,” Lopez said. “We were looking forward to staying open but we just couldn’t hire enough people. We had just one person who was doing all the work and it was just getting extremely tiring for him.”
