Sandoval County Animal Services has had to cancel its adoption event that was scheduled for Sunday.

Problems arose in making arrangements. Animal Care Associate Kelli Mortensen said she hopes to hold an adoption event soon.

The county still has dogs and cats available for adoption, and people can arrange to meet any pet they’re interested in adopting. To see animals needing homes, check the county Animal Services Facebook page here.

Mortensen said people interested in adopting fill out an application. Then county staff members would interview them about their lifestyles and what they were looking for in a pet to make sure the animal and humans are likely a good fit, followed by a home visit and meeting any other pets in the family.

If the home visit goes well, a trial adoption of one or two weeks starts, with the county providing food, collars, ID tags and leashes. If the trial adoption goes well, a full adoption is finalized.

Adoption fees are typically $120 for dogs and $100 for cats, with the price including vaccinations, microchipping, sterilization and tests for heart worms and tick-borne diseases.

The county is also looking for foster families for cats and dogs of all ages, as well as accepting donations of wire and plastic pet crates in all sizes, Kong toys, natural peanut butter (no xylitol), Kong treat paste, squeaky toys, new toothbrushes, blankets, towels and grooming supplies.
