My heart goes out to the relatives of the victims of the recent mass shootings in El Paso (Texas) and Dayton (Ohio).

These are becoming all too common occurrences. They also serve as a sad reminder that in February our Sandoval County Commission voted 4-1 to make Sandoval County a Second Amendment sanctuary county.

In other words, Sandoval County will not be enforcing common-sense gun laws like background checks and “red flag” laws that would keep guns out of the hands of felons, domestic abusers and the mentally ill — laws that will keep our families safe.

We need to ask our commissioners to rescind the resolution that creates a Second Amendment sanctuary, and if they won’t, perhaps it is time that we elect commissioners who will.
