It isn’t often one of the city’s varsity softball teams misses the state tournament, and although Cleveland and Rio Rancho qualified for the 16-team Class 5A bracket, each was eliminated in the single-elimination round last Friday.
The format for the rest of the tournament is double-elimination.
There will be plenty of softball action at both high schools in the City of Vision this week, just none involving the Rams or Storm. Visit nmact.org for the tournament brackets, game times and sites, and ticket prices.
Carlsbad 2, Cleveland 1: In what had been a scoreless game for six innings in Carlsbad Friday evening, the 15th-seeded Storm scored first with a run in the seventh.
The No. 2 Cavegirls (25-2) matched it with a run of their own in their half of the seventh, then pushed across the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth.
Cleveland (9-12) registered its first losing season since 2012, coach Angel Castillo’s debut with the Storm.
It was much closer than the Cavegirls’ 10-5 victory over the Storm on March 11 in a tournament in Las Cruces.
La Cueva 13, Rio Rancho 4: Beating the visiting Rams for the third time this season, No. 3 La Cueva scored in each of the first four innings and led 10-2 after five frames.
The Rams scored twice in their half of the sixth, but the Bears (24-3) scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to put it well out of reach. The Rams (13-14) also lost to La Cueva, 16-1, on March 25 in the Kristin Griego tournament at RRHS, and 7-1 on the Bears’ diamond on April 18.
