The city of Rio Rancho is hiring poll officials to work early voting and Election Day voting.

“Fulfill your civic duty and earn some extra cash by becoming an Election Official for the City of Rio Rancho’s 2024 Municipal Election,” the application reads.

The City Clerk’s Office is currently hiring election officials to work at six early voting and 12 Election Day polling locations.

“An Election Board Official performs a variety of clerical duties in support of municipal elections, i.e., process voters using Ballot on Demand system and issuing ballots, check voter photo identification, operate voter tabulator, inform the public on election information and maintain election equipment security throughout the election process. A select number of qualified Election Board Officials may be assigned to serve as a presiding judge; in that capacity, the employee will be expected to complete all tasks required of an Election Board Official plus serve as the lead to all other Election Board Officials within the assigned polling site,” the application details.

The duties a poll official would have are:

  • Support the accomplishment of municipal elections as directed by the New Mexico Election Code and Rio Rancho City Charter
  • Process voters using Ballot on Demand system
  • Maintain election equipment security throughout the election process
  • Maintain order and traffic flow in the polling site
  • Operate voter tabulator
  • Tally and balance at end of day
  • Assist and inform the public on election information in a neutral and nonpartisan manner
  • Perform basic clerical duties

According to the city, in order to qualify as a member of the election board, a person should be a voter of the county in which the person is appointed to serve, be able to read and write, have the necessary capacity to carry out an election board member’s functions with acceptable skill and dispatch and execute the election board member’s oath of office.

Candidates, spouses of candidates, children of candidates and police officers in any rank cannot become a poll official.

This is a temporary position staffed for approximately four weeks (or longer if there is a runoff election) only during the municipal election period. Each election board official must attend mandatory training prior to serving.
