Candidates filed to run for City of Rio Rancho offices today.

The unofficial list of candidates and the offices they’re running for follows:

  • District 2 City Councilor (four-year term)

  • District 3 City Councilor (four-year term)
    • Joshua Antonio Jones
    • Bob Tyler, incumbent
    • Clyde A. Ward
  • District 5 City Councilor (four-year term)
    • Karissa D. Culbreath, appointed incumbent
    • William Edward Dunn
  • Mayor—At-Large (four-year term)
    • Barbara Ann Jordan
    • Greggory D. Hull, incumbent
    • Jaclyn Wilhite
  • Municipal Judge—At-Large (four-year term)
    • Jonathan L. Muniz
    • Robert Cook, incumbent

The city clerk must notify each individual in writing no later 5 p.m. Friday as to whether their declaration of candidacy was qualified or disqualified. This status will also be made available on the city’s website.

Each qualified candidate will appear on the official ballot, unless a signed and notarized statement of withdrawal is submitted to the city clerk on or before the seven days after the candidacy filing date.

Write-In Candidacy

People desiring to be a write-in candidate may file a declaration of write-in candidacy on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Candidacy challenging

As per state law, any voter may challenge the candidacy of an individual seeking election to a municipal office by filing a petition in district court within seven days after the regular or write-in filing date.

 

Run-off election

If no candidate for an office receives more than 50 percent of the total votes, the candidates with the highest and second-highest vote totals will be subject to a runoff election. The runoff election would be held on Tuesday, April 12.

Also appearing on the March 1, 2022 ballot will be charter amendment questions, as well as general obligation bond questions for roadspublic safety and quality-of-life facilities.
