The Chill Zone isn’t just a place to get some tasty frozen yogurt. It’s also a place where young people can chill.
Elaine Diaz, co-owner of The Chill Zone, has been working since purchasing the business in August to make The Chill Zone a family-friendly place where young people can hang out and have fun.
In the latest move in April, she and her husband — and business partner, James — added Friday Fun Night. June 24 was the Karaoke and Dance Party Saturday.
The first Friday of the month is mystery night, the second is Lego night, the third is glow night and the fourth is movie night. Diaz said the first Karaoke Dance Party was a huge success.
“We’re continuing through fall since our falls are really pretty out here,” Diaz said. “So we’re hoping to continue to at least the fall to give our community something to do.”
The Friday events typically start at 2 p.m. and the karaoke nights are from 6-9 p.m. The Chill Zone usually offers discounts and giveaways during the events. Since taking over the frozen yogurt shop, Diaz has added cornhole, games and free Wi-Fi. She has plans to add TVs by football season to do an event for Monday Night Football for kids.
Diaz said her goal is make The Chill Zone the place to be for Rio Rancho youths.
“I love kids I just wanted to do something to involve the community in a safe place for them to come and enjoy with their family and friends,” Diaz said. “And I think it’s been very successful and I can’t wait to continue going.”
