A male Cleveland High School student was arrested after being seen carrying a handgun to school on Tuesday morning.
He is being held at the Bernalillo County Juvenile Detention Center, Rio Rancho Police Department Lt. Jacquelynn Reedy told the Observer.
Late Tuesday morning, a Cleveland High School student told a Rio Rancho Public Schools Safety and Security officer that the suspect had a weapon. The suspect was contacted, and authorities located and confiscated the handgun, according to Rio Rancho Public Schools.
“That student did the right thing and thankfully we were able to get the gun,” Reedy said.
At no time were any threats made, and the weapon was not brandished or pointed at anyone. RRPD was called, and the student was arrested, per the RRPS press release.
“At this time, we don’t know why he decided to bring the firearm,” she said.
All students were safe and went about their regular school day, according to RRPS.
The student is still at the juvenile detention center and will face disciplinary action by the district. Reedy said that student is also likely to face criminal charges.
“We appreciate the student who reported this immediately,” an RRPS press release states. “Please continue to urge your children to report suspicious activities or disturbing information to a trusted adult. Together we can prevent situations like this and ensure the safety of our students and staff.”
