State Sen. and Minority Whip Craig Brandt (R-Rio Rancho) introduced a bill to provide a tax deduction for teachers who purchase their own school supplies.

Senate Bill 28, which was introduced on Jan. 17, would give a $500 deduction from net income this year and a $1,000 deduction starting in 2024.

“It is unconscionable that in a state where we are going to spend a record $4.3 billion on public education that teachers would still have to go into their own pockets to purchase basic school supplies for their classrooms,” Brandt said in a statement. “This bill is a stopgap measure to give our teachers a bit of a break until we can deal with the monumental bureaucratic overhead that is keeping dollars out of the classroom.”

Senate Bill 28 will be heard at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Senate Tax, Business, and Transportation Committee.
