The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico is officially opening of its first location in the district of Bernalillo Public Schools at Santo Domingo Elementary School,
which serves Santo Domingo Pueblo.

A grand opening celebration will take place at the school at 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 5, with attendance from community leaders, Pueblo officials and school administrators.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central New Mexico has partnered with Bernalillo Public Schools to open locations at all six elementary schools in the district: Santo Domingo Elementary, Cochiti Elementary, Algodones Elementary, Placitas Elementary, Bernalillo Elementary and WD Carroll Elementary. The six club locations will serve over 300 students per day, most of whom will qualify for free membership through state Child, Youth and Family Department Childcare Assistance. There are plans to also open sites in the district’s middle and high schools in the future.

This program is the first of its kind in Bernalillo, where after-school care has not historically been offered. Elementary-aged members will now have a safe place to be while school is not in session, where they can develop positive relationships with peers and adults. Boys & Girls Clubs provide programming in the three priority outcome areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles and Good Character & Citizenship.

Boys & Girls Club Area Director and former Bernalillo Public Schools teacher Manuel Montaño is familiar with the communities and their needs, and is working closely with Superintendent Matt Montaño.

The opening of the six locations will also provide part-time and full-time job opportunities for the community and increase access to other services for members and their families.
