The temporary Officer Gregg “Nigel” Benner memorial will be removed as Pinetree Road gets reconstructed. The memorial will become permanent upon completion.

“The city has been working with the Benner family regarding the design of a permanent memorial for several months that will be installed along Pinetree at the completion of project work,” Deputy City Manager Peter Wells said.

The Air Force veteran and Rio Rancho Police Department Officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop across the street from Veterans Monument Park on Memorial Day in 2015.

Sandoval County District Attorney Barbara Romo wrote to the public on the matter in 2021 and said, “Officer Benner was a beloved family man and proud member of his community. His selfless service to others was remarkable to all those who knew him.”

Pinetree Road is currently in the design phase of the project and a finish date is to be determined. Trees have already been removed along the road.

The Observer will follow the story as Pinetree Road comes to a finish and Benner’s memorial becomes permanent.
