Gerald Maes, 50, of Aztec, pleaded guilty on January 30 for the 2021 murder of Randy Murphy.

The Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched on June 18, 2021, to a reported shooting at a residence in Jemez, New Mexico.

The female caller claimed she and her friend, Murphy, were next to her car on her brother’s property when three people approached them.

She told officers that she knew two of them. The third person was identified as Maes.

One stated, “Hey Randy someone wants to see you,” according to court records. Then Maes pulled out a gun and said, “You shouldn’t have done it.”

Maes then shot Murphy under his left arm. The woman said Maes then got into his truck, wiped down the gun and threw it out the window.

Maes was charged with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. The tampering charge was dropped as part of the guilty plea.

Maes will serve 10 years in corrections and then five years of probation.
