Martin Patterson opened Artist Barbershop in 2021 with a goal of doing more than just keep people in Rio Rancho looking good. He also wanted to do good for the community.

On Aug. 6, Patterson will continue to do so with the third annual Show & Shine event, a car show that fills the parking lot at Lariat Square on Southern Blvd. and helps people in Rio Rancho. Artist will host Show & Shine with all proceeds and donations going to Ronald McDonald House, which provides family housing and meals. DJ Sider will be performing live, and there will be food trucks,  jumpers and raffles. The event runs from noon-4 p.m.

“We do a car show every year to benefit a nonprofit. We’ve been doing it for two years already,” Patterson said. “Just cars come out and people can give a donation, whatever they may want to do and everything goes to the nonprofit.”

Patterson held the first Show & Shine in October 2021 to celebrate the grand opening of Artist in August. That event had music, food and cars with all of Artist’s sales that day being donated to Haven House, the only domestic violence shelter for Sandoval County.

“I wanted to set the city straight right away, that that’s what we’re about,” Patterson said. “We’re about giving back in every way we can. We literally give everything that we make; we’re not profiting at all.”

For the second Show & Shine last July, Artist helped more than 100 kids with free school supplies and gave away tuition to music school.

Patterson recently expanded the Artist brand with the opening of a second location in Los Ranchos in May.

Patterson grew up on Albuquerque’s West Side but has been in Rio Rancho for the past five years. His vision for his shop was to be a place where every Rio Ranchoan feels welcome and can get a fresh cut.

“We’re not trying to be flashy or any of that,” Patterson said. “We just want to be the shop where mom could come, a grandpa could come, a young kid could come, anyone could come and feel comfortable. So we really strive to do that.”
