The Polar Express will be coming through Rio Rancho this month in the form of figure skating.
The Figure Skating Club of Rio Rancho and the McDermott Athletic Center’s Learn-to-Skate program will be hosting their 2023 holiday Christmas recitals Saturday, Dec. 16, and Wednesday, Dec. 20, with a Polar Express theme.
“We usually just like to chose a theme that’s seasonal and family-friendly,” said Evelyn Cook, the MAC’s skating director. “Each show is slightly different.”
LaToya Taylor, secretary of the FSCRR, wrote in an announcement that, “Our figure skaters have worked hard on their skating skills throughout the year to bring this holiday spectacular. The club skaters will be performing short programs featuring Christmas-themed ice dances.”
She noted that the five synchronized teams of ice skaters will also perform their show pieces.
Cook said the shows will feature skaters as young as 4 up to skaters ages 70-plus. “It’s a very wide range,” she said. “Our program has grown a lot in the last five years, and we’re just starting to ramp up with these programs.”
Admission to the holiday shows is free. Saturday’s show runs 10 a.m. to noon with the Dec. 20 show running 6-8 p.m. For more information or to get involved with figure skating at the MAC, visit themacsports.com.
